Monflanquin

Monflanquin is a traditional Bastide Market Town.  It is perched on the top of a hill which can be seen View Towards Monflanquin from Le Beau Regisaccross the rolling countryside from every angle.

Of course, the nature of a Bastide town was to build the centre within a fortified wall to protect the town from attack.  All of this is still untouched today and the history within the narrow cobbled streets and central square is there for you to feel.

If you stand at the very top end of the village you are treated to views for miles around.  Of course hundreads of years ago these vantage points were used to look for approaching enemies.

Prince NoirThe central square to which we refer is called the Place des Arcades.  It, like the rest of Monflanquin is steeped in history.  It has some beautiful buildings dating back to the 13th Century.  One of which was the house of the black prince!

During the hundread years war the Black Prince stayed in Monflanquin and it would not suprise you to learn that the House of the Black Prince is where he stayed.  A most luxurious property over looking the main hustle and bustle of the square.

There are several good restaurants in Monflanquin, mostly around the central square. Warning - keep children away from the bottom left corner of the square, where there is a shop that sells irresistible toys made from wood.

The busiest days in Monflanquin's annual Evening in the Squarecalendar are the medieval days - a couple of days in the summer, when the town has a festival filling the town, with exhibitions of falconry, people dressed in 'olden days' clothes, general goriness and so on. Don't miss it.

There is a farmers market on Thursday morning and during the summer months the square hosts a large social feast with live music. There are dozens of stalls serving many local delacacies, you are able to select which dished you prefer and eat on one of the many long tables in the centre of the square.  The live music is excellent and you are really able to soak up the atmosphere.
